About Amharic

Amharic is the official language of Ethiopia and the native tongue of the Amhara people. It’s widely spoken throughout the country and among diaspora communities in the U.S., Canada, and beyond. Interestingly, many Rastafarians learn Amharic as a sacred language due to its historical ties to Ethiopia.

  • In Amharic, the word for "myself" literally means "my head" — ራሴ (rase).
  • Each character in the Amharic script represents a consonant + vowel sound.
  • Coffee, or ቡና (buna), originated in Ethiopia. The Amharic word for it sounds completely different from "coffee" or "café".
  • The definite article in Amharic comes after the noun, not before — e.g., ልጅ (lej) is "child", while ልጁ (leju) means "the child".
